Tenant Organizing

At Jane Place, we support tenants forming tenant unions, passing laws to improve tenant rights, and we work to change the social conditions tenants face here in Louisiana. We work in coalition with various organizations to support the rights of all people impacted by the “eviction machine” including unhoused/homeless individuals and others.

Through our tenant organizing division, we have been able to:

  • Work with tenants to birth the New Orleans Renters Rights Assembly. A semi-autonomous group made up of tenants and houseless individuals throughout the metro area who organize tenants, fight for better policies, and work to improve rental conditions throughout the metro area.
  • Work with tenants to create 11 tenant unions throughout Orleans and Jefferson parishes.
  • Organized with tenants to secure over $2 million dollars in anti-displacement funds at Oakmont Apartments and other apartment complexes around the city.
  • Secured interpreters and enhanced rental assistance funding for Spanish and Vietnamese speakers in 2021.
  • Worked in coalition with tenants and the New Orleans Renters Rights Assembly to get a fully comprehensive Right to Counsel program passed in New Orleans.
  • Co-created and co-managed a successful campaign to get Healthy Homes passed (our city and the Deep South’s first comprehensive habitability standards and anti-retaliation program).
