Our Community Engagement department educates, conducts outreach, organizes tenants, and builds powerful coalitions to pass more just housing laws. We use multiple strategies to engage the community regarding housing issues: conducting public education and outreach, hosting community events, and organizing tenants to bring vulnerable renters and working-class homeowners together to take action against illegal evictions and displacement!
Since 2016, we have:
- Hosted over 200 outreach events in metro New Orleans over the past ten years.
- We’ve engaged over 10,000 members of our community via our education, organizing and social events over the past ten years.
- Hosted 16 renters rights “Know Your Rights” workshops annually (including 3 every year in Spanish).
- Hosted over 30 renters rights legal clinics each year with volunteer attorneys.
- Organized 11 tenant unions across our metro area.
- Co-created and co-managed coalitions that got Right to Counsel, Healthy Homes, the Housing Trust Fund, and Short-Term Rental reforms passed.
Led a statewide coalition to defeat several anti-homelessness laws at the state legislature.
