Community Engagement

Our Community Engagement department educates, conducts outreach, organizes tenants, and builds powerful coalitions to pass more just housing laws. We use multiple strategies to engage the community regarding housing issues: conducting public education and outreach, hosting community events, and organizing tenants to bring vulnerable renters and working-class homeowners together to take action against illegal evictions and displacement!

Since 2016, we have:

  • Hosted over 200 outreach events in metro New Orleans over the past ten years.
  • We’ve engaged over 10,000 members of our community via our education, organizing and social events over the past ten years.
  • Hosted 16 renters rights “Know Your Rights” workshops annually (including 3 every year in Spanish).
  • Hosted over 30 renters rights legal clinics each year with volunteer attorneys.
  • Organized 11 tenant unions across our metro area.
  • Co-created and co-managed coalitions that got Right to Counsel, Healthy Homes, the Housing Trust Fund, and Short-Term Rental reforms passed.
  • Led a statewide coalition to defeat several anti-homelessness laws at the state legislature.
